Century old sectarian feuds not easily solved by 21st century democracy

You hear the headlines everyday - Dozens, and occasionally, hundreds of people killed by suicide bomb attacks in Iraq. These grim statistics are then often quickly countered by some politicans, and our president, vowing to "stay the course" in an effort to bring more "security" to the Iraqi people.

Ideas are circulating about increasing troop levels to help restore the current situation. However, how does one restore security in an environment where you have two different factions of a religious belief that have been at odds with each other now openly taking arms up against one another?

The lack of foresight and consideration of the consequences have lead to the current debacle in Iraq today. Attempting to resolve the situation now diplomatically is getting more and more difficult by the day.

Ultimately it will have to be the Iraqi people who decide the fate of their country. With the ever increasing violence, however, the idea that there can be a peaceful resolution to the chaos that now reigns looks dimmer and dimmer every day.

Wars are easy to begin; Ending them are an entirely different matter it seems.
