Milestone Came And Went; Time for the Next Reality Show.
Seems we Americans have a short attention span. 1000 soldiers dead - Well, that is indeed a profound tragedy. Yet, somehow, a few days later, it is all but forgotten. Nevermind, also, that the official figure of those wounded in the war is now over 6000. If you believe the official figures, which, for the sake of argument let's just say they are real - That's 7000 families affected; 7000 families who will never again be the same. Every day, the situation in Iraq spirals more and more out of control - but honestly, would you know it? Yes, the news runs an article here and there, a story here and there. But you know, Barry Bonds 700th home run is much more important and has a lot more impact on the world and life as we know it. People thousands of years from now will be remembering how Barry Bonds hit that 700th home run and how Madonna gave herself a douche in a hotel in Tel Aviv. But what do you expect from a population that buys 700+ channels on DirecTV or Cable, with half of them being Sports channels and the other half piping some reality television nonsense. History? Books? School? Who needs those, right? Let's just grab a double espresso, turn on the TV, and tune out. Let's pretend everything in the world is fine and dandy. There are no problems in the world, after all, right? Big bad Saddam has been captured and can no longer threaten us! Never mind that he had nothing to do with 911.. Shh. Don't mention that part; that's not "politically correct". In the meanwhile, the milestone quietly came and went and another one looms on the horizon - 2000. Then what, 3000? Then what? 5000? 58,000? (PBN Note - It's 2007 and we are over 3000. Unfortunately another PBN accurate prediction) |
