CA Governor Schwarzenegger's insurance idea: Why it won't work
According to the Los Angeles Times, "Although the administration has not revealed details of how it would pay for such a program, officials estimate that extending insurance to all children could cost the state as much as $400 million a year." That $400 million would most likely come out of the pockets of the tax paying Californian, as is almost always the case. The governor argues that illegal immigrants are required by Federal Law to be allowed to use emergency rooms and that this plan would lesson the burden on the healthcare system. What he fails to realize, however - Or perhaps does realize but does not mention, is that offering a greenlight to healthcare for illegal immigrants will only further encourage them to come here. Understanding why illegal immigrants come to this country is not all that difficult - Most of them are seeking a better life for themselves and their families. Big businesses prey upon this economic disparity by offering illegal aliens employment without benefits and at significantly lower rates in the hopes that those businesses can increase their profit margin. This gives illegal immigrants incentives to come to this country. Further incentives in the form of free healthcare will only increase the influx of illegal immigrants. Perhaps it would be more wise on the part of California's governor to look to improving the quality of life and needs of his state's legal residents before attempting to implement an altruistic idea that would only further burden the people of California. |
