Environmentally Conscious Doesn't Mean You're A Left-Wing Hippie

I am surprised to read on various blogs that certain people equate being conscious of the world's problems is the equivalent of being a left wing hippie. Do right wing conservatives not care about clean water, air nor have a desire to be free from the dependence of foreign oil as well?

Whether you believe in global warming or not, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize we are living in a world with finite resources. Judging by the skyrocketing food and oil prices, these resources are either running out, being more tightly regulated by political forces, or both.

It would make sense then to become more educated and concerned regarding these resources and thereby attempting to find a solution to address the situation. I have never been a believer of extremes; In my opinion, being extreme in either direction blinds you to the reality of the situation. However, taking an interest in one's environment does not make you an extreme leftist - We both have to live in this same environment.

With the rampant consumerism that is the status quo these days, doesn't it make some sense to slow down and ask yourself, "Maybe I am consuming a little too much? Maybe I should slow down?"

"Don't tell me how to live my life, you hippie!" is the general reply by some to the above sentiment. Yet, how will you live your life when the resources required to manufacture your latest toys run out?

Taking a pro-active approach in dealing with our dwindling resources doesn't make you a leftwing hippie - It shows that you are an intelligent, rational, thinking individual.
